Speed Limits

50 km per hour, within localities

90 km per hour, outside the localities

Note that speed limits are controlled by unmarked cars and unmarked radars.


Minimum driving age

To drive a car on the island of Madeira you must be at least 18 years old, but to rent a car the minimum age is 23 or sometimes 25.

You can still rent a car under the age of 23 for a fee.


Radar warning devices

Safety camera warning devices are illegal in Portugal and, even if you are caught with one, turned on or not, it will be confiscated and you will be fined.
